Derby, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire residents are set to roll out the red carpet and cheer some of the world’s best cyclists as stage four of the men’s Tour of Britain comes to the East Midlands later this week.
On Friday 6 September, for the first time in the Tour’s history, Derby is set to host, the start-line. Following the start in Derby, the riders will be passing through iconic spots across Derbyshire and Nottingham and finally ending stage four over three gruelling hours later in Newark on Trent.
Riders include Team GB Paris Olympic gold medal winner Tom Pidcock as well as Belgian double gold winner Remco Evenepoel.
Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, said:
“The excitement has been building for weeks and I can’t wait to welcome the Tour to the East Midlands region and I’m looking forward to setting off the race in Derby. I’ll be cheering on the cyclists at the start and congratulating them at the end of the race in Newark.
The Tour of Britain coming here is a superb opportunity for all of us to show what a great region we live in. Nearly 75 million visitors came to the region over the last year, supporting over 50,000 jobs worth £5bn – the Tour is a great opportunity to showcase our cities, towns and villages.One of my key priorities is to launch Visit East Midlands and bringing the Tour of Britain to Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire signals my ambition to shine the spotlight on our wonderful region.”
The Tour, which started in the Scottish Borders in Kelso on Tuesday, will pass through Derby > Alvaston > Boulton > Elvaston > Risley > West Hallam > Smalley > Heanor > Langley Mill > Eastwood > Brinsley > Underwood > Moorgreen > Greasley > Hucknall > Papplewick > Ravenshead > Blidworth > Farnsfield > Edingly > Halam > Southwell > Caunton > Tuxford > Collingham > Coddington > Newark
