Mayor of the East Midlands Claire Ward has invited Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard to join a Peak Partnership Summit to work in the service of the Peak District and its future.

Recognising that whilst the Peak District is located predominately in Derbyshire, parts of it stretch into Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, with people living, working and travelling between the regions on a daily basis.

Mayor Claire is keen to work across the three regions to tackle issues and realise the opportunities the Peak District, and its surrounding towns and villages, presents.  She has called for a Peak Partnership Summit to be held in the coming months to speak about these shared goals, in particular highlighting:

  1. Productive partnership with the Peak District National Park: focusing on spatial planning, futureproofing, and tourism.
  2. Securing the future of Snake Pass: focusing on infrastructure investment and climate adaptation.
  3. Strengthening connectivity between regions: building shared approaches to transport investment to ensure that people who live, work, and play in the District can benefit from improved public transport, better roads, and active travel links.

Mayor of the East Midlands Claire Ward said: “I recognise that whilst boundaries need to be drawn somewhere, they often don’t reflect the realities of people’s everyday lives, as many residents will work and travel across the regions.

“The Peak District has specific issues that are best addressed by working closely across boundaries, in order to achieve more for the whole area.

“I am inviting Andy Burnham and Oliver Coppard to work with me on issues like the future of Snake Pass and working with the Peak District National Park to get the best deal for residents in Derbyshire and those visiting the area.”
